Wu Mei Sang Shen Yin: A Sour-Sweet Herbal Drink for Hot Weather
乌梅桑椹饮 · pan chinese cuisine
This drink comes from a formula popularized by Chinese-medicine teacher Luo Dalun. It is shared here as a traditional tonic drink: the author suggests drinking it 2-3 times a week and notes that rock sugar can be added to balance the tartness of the smoked plum. As with any herbal preparation, those with health conditions should use their own judgment.

Techniques you'll use
- Simmering (dun) ↗
Gentle low-heat cooking in liquid until flavors merge and meat softens.
Steps
- 1
Step 1

Gather all the ingredients: 2 smoked plums, 4 hawthorn slices, 2 dried rosebuds, 5 g poria, 5 g dried mulberry, and 3 g dried tangerine peel.
✅ Done when: All seven ingredients are measured out and laid out on the counter, ready to go into the pot.

Place all the ingredients into an electric kettle/potion cooker (or a small pot), add about 1 liter of water, and simmer for about 10 minutes. The smoked plum is fairly tart, so you can add some rock sugar to taste.
✅ Done when: The water has taken on a deep color from the herbs after about 10 minutes of simmering.

Step 3

The sour-sweet plum drink is ready. Serve it warm or cooled — it is especially refreshing on hot days.
✅ Done when: The liquid tastes pleasantly sour and sweet and is ready to drink.
