FAQ

Find answers to common questions about ChopZen and Chinese cooking

Are ChopZen recipes authentic Chinese?

Yes! Our recipes are based on traditional Chinese cooking methods passed down through generations. We adapt them slightly for modern home kitchens while preserving the essential techniques and flavors.

I am a beginner. Where should I start?

Start with our Getting Started guide! We recommend beginning with simple stir-fry dishes like “Easy Vegetable Stir-Fry” or “Classic Tomato Eggs.”

Where can I find Chinese ingredients?

Many ingredients are available at regular supermarkets (ginger, garlic, soy sauce, rice). For specialty items, visit Asian grocery stores or order online. We provide substitution suggestions when ingredients are hard to find.

What equipment do I need?

A basic setup includes: a wok or large skillet, a sharp knife, a cutting board, and basic measuring tools. For most recipes, a standard kitchen is sufficient.

Are there vegetarian/vegan options?

Yes! Use our filter system to browse vegetarian and vegan recipes. Many traditional Chinese dishes are naturally plant-based.

More Common Questions

Do I need a wok?

No. A wok is helpful for fast stir-frying, but many ChopZen recipes work in a skillet, saucepan, Dutch oven, or steamer basket. When equipment matters, the recipe notes explain why.

How spicy are the recipes?

Spice level varies by dish. Recipes with chili, Sichuan peppercorn, or hot bean paste include spice cues where possible, and many can be adjusted by reducing chili oil or fresh peppers.

Can I substitute hard-to-find ingredients?

Yes, but substitutions change flavor. ChopZen prioritizes substitutions that keep the cooking method intact, such as using dry sherry for Shaoxing wine when needed, or using a milder chili paste when heat tolerance is low.
